Powerboat Driver Overcomes Spinal Cord Pain to Compete

Rusty Rahm

Based in Osage Beach, Missouri, Russell "Rusty" Rahm guides Wake Effects, LLC, a certified MasterCraft boat dealership. As a rookie driver in 2016, Rusty Rahm and his racing team won the prestigious powerboat racing Super Boat International Triple Crown in the Superboat Unlimited class.

Featured in a June 2017 LakeExpo.com article, Mr. Rahm spoke about his experience battling persistent neck pain starting in late 2016. Around the time of his victory in the Super Boat International Offshore World Championship, he was unable to sleep more than 15 minutes at night.
Not realizing the seriousness of the situation, he consulted a physician on getting a cortisone shot to ease the pain. Instead, an MRI pointed to severe spinal cord pressure that could result in serious nerve and spinal cord injury. With the 2017 racing season only two months away, he elected to undergo a leading-edge artificial disc replacement procedure designed to relieve pressure and ensure the integrity of the cervical spine.
By late May, he was back in his speedboat, competing in the Space Coast Super Boat Grand Prix in Cocoa Beach, Florida, which opened the 2017 Super Boat International Offshore racing season.
